Mayflower Wind Project

The project

Mayflower Wind is a Massachusetts Wind Farm, a joint venture between Shell and Ocean Winds. We are backed by the combined capability, experience, commitment to innovation and financial strength of a world-leading offshore energy developer and a world-leading wind power and renewable energy developer.

At Mayflower Offshore Wind, we are committed to safety first and always, innovation and industry development, and investing in our local communities.

In December 2018, Mayflower Wind won the right to develop a lease area that can support up to 1,600MW of offshore wind more than 20 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard. That’s enough to power 680,000 New England homes. We expect that Mayflower Wind energy will be delivered as early as the mid-2020s.

Benefits

    • Once in operation, power from the Mayflower wind project is expected to eliminate 2.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually – the equivalent of taking 5.3 million cars off the road;
    • Future cost savings for New England electricity customers as the price of offshore wind continues to fall rapidly;
    • Unique capability to train generations of future New England offshore workers for well-paid and innovative jobs in wind power, leveraging Shell’s 40-plus years’ experience in the Gulf of Mexico and North Sea and OW’s experience as the world’s fourth-largest producer of wind energy;
    • Offshore windmanufacturing and supply chain development represents thousands of new jobs across the North East US, including Wind Power to Massachusetts;
    • $135 million lease payment to the US government.

Mayflower Offshore Wind prides itself on being a responsible and reliable environmental steward. That means minimizing the harm and potential impact on the environment. We continually focus on using the best science and data to see the big picture as well as the small details that are critical to the success of our project, our neighbours and our region.

We will conduct extensive surveys, produce a detailed environmental impact statement and work collaboratively with local partners to understand their concerns and use their feedback to ensure we construct a Massachusetts Wind Farm with as little impact as possible.

We expect energy to be delivered as early as the mid-2020s.
